Specific Details Required changes to Credit Union related legislation to allow them collaborate across common bonds, to widen membership criteria and introduce their members to State Savings schemes.

Intended results Bring about changes to the Credit Union legislation to enable credit unions to support filling the void, in particular being created by banks withdrawing from the Irish market and to ensure a national solution can be a possibility by permitting credit unions to collaborate on lending opportunities.

Explain how some changes to credit union legislation will contribute to achieving many of the critical elements identified in the Programme for Government, and at the same time enhance the sustainability of credit unions. Credit unions have the funds and the market reach, but without amended legislation that market reach will diminish as rural credit unions will not be able to survive. How the Private Members Bill, titled Credit Union Amendment Bill 2021, as introduced to the Dáil on the 21st October 2021 falls short of this opportunity.
