Specific Details
Youth Work Ireland, Annual Oireachtas Briefing Event Areas identified for discussion: Mental Health & CAMHS. Youth Service Grant. Relationships & Sexuality Education implement report of National Council for Curriculum Assessment. The role of the community training centre in FET.
Intended results
Mental Health In the wake of Covid and recent revelations ensure the proper support and funding for CAMHs and immediately move to fill the current 100 (of 495) vacant posts. At the end of August 2021, there were 2,384 children awaiting CAMHS services with 170 of those waiting more than a year to be seen. This is the main community response to youth mental health issues and the alternative to institutional settings. Services are still mainly 9-5, Monday to Friday despite commitments made.
Youth Service Grant Ensure Reforms to the Youth Service grant do not endanger the future of local youth services led by local people. The present review of the Youth Service Grant can serve to strengthen and recognize the key infrastructure that local youth services provide in local communities. It must recognize the diversity and variety of the work supported by local youth services and be overly prescriptive regarding targets and groups.
Implement the report of the National Council for Curriculum Assessment (NCCA) relating to Relationships and Sexuality Educate (RSE) and Sex education. there has effectively been no progress since. This was a critical piece of research and had considerable buy in from young people. The review is important to the health and well-being of young people but also their faith in the political system.
