Proposal for a Regulation amending Regulation (EU) No 1308/2013 establishing a common organisation of the markets in agricultural products
Intended results
Regarding the vote in the European Parliament plenary of 19-22 October, on the Proposal for a Regulation amending Regulation (EU) No 1308/2013 establishing a common organisation of the markets in agricultural products ("Regulation 1308/2013"), we want to bring to your attention the issue of the use of the meat and dairy sales denominations to market vegetarian and vegan foodstuffs.
Amendment 165 must be adopted to ensure that the use of terms such as "steak", "sausage", "escalope", "burger" or "hamburger" are for products that exclusively contain meat. The use of such terms to describe plant-based products is misleading to the consumer and must be avoided.
Similarly, we support the adoption of Amendment 171 to maintain and enhance the current provisions set out in Article 78 of the Regulation, read in conjunction with Part III of Annex VII of Regulation 1308/2013 (Milk and Milk Products). These provisions reserve the use of terms such as "milk", "cheese", "yoghurt", "butter" or "whey" exclusively to products that contain dairy milk.
Rejection of these amendments would undermine the reputation and nutritional quality of our beef and dairy produce.
