64th IFA Annual General Meeting
Intended results
Brexit - that the Backstop remains, unless the UK adjust their 'red lines'. That we have unfettered access to our largest market. To make a very strong case that farmers need support. To outline that while a hard Brexit may be a few moths away, farmers problems are here and now. To outline that beef farmers in particular are having a torrid time. To make case that farmers need €20 per head for every 5c per kilo reduction.
CAP Reform - that the CAP budget is increased to take account of inflation, and to compensate farmers for any further requirements imposed on them. The CAP mus have two elements - direct payments supporting active farmers and a well-funded Rural Development Programme. To make the case for upwards only convergence. That CAP funding goes to 'genuine farmers'.
Climate Change - to emphasis that Irish dairy farmers are the most carbon efficient in Europe and that our beef farmers are amongst the top five. To point out that farmers are addressing climate change and that nine out of every ten measures under the CAP have specific environmental or sustainability elements. To point out the Smart Farming programme run by IFA / EPA and others and how it shows the 'win win' opportunities for participants.
Climate Change - that the Oireachtas Climate Action Committee would take on board the Teagasc roadmap that has 27 measures which could reduce climate emissions by almost 9 megatones. That the Taoiseach's department would coordinate the Government Departments and state agencies in the delivery of the climate pathway for the sector.
Retail Regulation - .to make the case for an independent regulator for the food chain.
