Specific Details
United States Trade Tariffs
Intended results
To discuss the effect the proposed US tariffs will have on the food industry, particularly butter.
To highlight that, although Ireland has a larger share of the market in the US for butter than it had in 2019(the last time the US imposed Tariffs) there is a worry that these new tariffs will adversely affect our exports and increase the cost of doing business significantly.
That these tariffs will impact the competitiveness of Irish products on the US market, including Kerrygold. The fact that New Zealand only has a 10% tariff for dairy products and the UK only has a 10% tariff on drinks, while the EU will have 20% tariffs, will leave Ireland at a competitive disadvantage against some of our biggest competitors in these two sectors.
To emphasise that Irish MEPs must be aware of the importance of understanding any potential negative impact of trade wars.
