Anti-dumping Measure on Lysine Imports
Intended results
To challenge the introduction of anti-dumping measures on lysine imports by the European Commission.
To highlight how the introduction of these measures will have significant implications for the pig and poultry sectors, particularly given the increased costs in lysine if tariffs of between 58.3% and 84.8% are applied. It is crucially important that these measures would not go ahead.
To highlight the primary concerns of Irish farmers such as:
Cost Impact - A sharp rise in input costs for compound feed formulations, directly affecting production costs for these sectors.
Competitiveness - Higher lysine costs may indirectly result in increased imports of pork and poultry products from non-EU countries that can source cheaper lysine.
Supply Challenges - Potential difficulties in sourcing alternative lysine supplies, and indeed the availability and price of soya.
Sustainability Challenges - Reducing lysine usage in pig/poultry diets will significantly impact the carbon footprint and sustainability of the Pig & Poultry Sector. If lysine (and therefore, other amino acid) usage is to be reduced, more soybean meal will be required to meet demands for amino acids.
Environmental Challenges This could pose significant environmental challenges for the pig and poultry sector due to the potential increase in crude protein levels in the diet which would add further additional cost.
To stress that these challenges pose a dual financial burden on the industry - through increased production costs and the risk of market displacement by more competitively priced imports.
To seek a meeting with the Department of Enterprise representatives in Brussels to discuss Irish Farmers' concerns.
