IFA Manifesto for Local Government Elections 2024 - Crime in Rural Areas
Intended results
To highlight that rural crime is a major concern to farmers and members of the rural community, more than half of farmers surveyed have been the victims of theft. Criminal gangs have targeted farmers with theft of GPS systems. There has been incidence of illegal hunting, criminal damage to farms and thefts, and threats and intimidation are on the rise.
To propose that there is greater visibility, through increased Garda numbers and presence.
To propose that there is a roll out of national Community CCTV Scheme in rural areas and to resolve GDPR issues for Gardaí in accessing community footage in special cases.
To propose that there is increased community policing by getting Gardaí back in communities as the established go-to-person in rural areas.
To propose that there is an improved response times to reports of crime and calls for assistance.
To propose that there is timelier feedback to victims of crime with greater investigation follow up.
To propose the establishment of a national dedicated multi-agency Rural Crime Task Force.
To propose the development of a Gardaí national policy on trespass and illegal hunting in the handling of victims and perpetrators of these crimes.
To propose to review and enhance the effectiveness and availability of community alert and property-marking schemes in partnership with rural stakeholders to combat rural crime.
