Specific Details EU Directive 2014/61/EU improves the business case for investment in High-Speed broadband infrastructure by requiring all utility companies including electricity, road and gas networks to offer infrastructure sharing to telecommunication companies in order to reduce the overall cost of the provision of high-speed broadband services to households and business.

Intended results That the Directive is transposed into Irish Law in a manner that ensures access by telecom operators to all utility infrastructure on fair and transparent terms. To ensure that all utility infrastructure is covered by the Directive thus addressing the current imbalance whereby eir is the only company legally obliged to share its infrastructure and is therefore disadvantaged against competing utility competitors in the roll-out of high-speed broadband services.

13 October 2015. Identifying key elements of the EU Directive and proposing an approach to transposition that would deliver best efficiencies for infrastructure investment

Letter (2-5)

4 December 2015. Highlighting the approach of UK Government to the transposition of the Directive with specific reference to ensuring maximum beneficial impact on the roll-out of broadband.
