Specific Details
IFA Climate Summit
Intended results
To highlight the many positives in the way Irish farmers produce food
To emphasise how important Agriculture is to the Irish economy.
To investigate the science behind climate issues and outline what the agricultural sector will be required to do as part of the recent Government Climate Action Plan.
To discuss future policy challenges for Irish farmers and the wider agri-food industry
To insist that while Irish farmers will work to reduce emissions, they will not stand for a reduction in output and incomes just to see global emissions increase.
- Imports of food from Brazil into the European Unions increased by 47% in 2022. This figure makes a mockery of the Government's commitment in their climate act that national policies won't lead to production moving to countries with more lax environmental policies.
- The Government needs to invest in R&D to ensure farmers can continue to be productive while reducing emissions. the European Union has already approved a product which significantly reduces methane emissions from livestock. We need to expediate already promising research on how this and other products can be delivered in a grass-based system
IFA members recognise the climate challenge and they are keen to play their part, however, this cannot be at the expense of their livelihoods.
