Sheep Sector - Input Crisis
Intended results
IFA has submitted proposals to the Minister for Agriculture which aim to protect and maintain the current sheep market against the input inflation crisis. The submission highlighted that the production cost increases sheep farmers are now exposed to have very serious consequences for the sector.
To highlight that the average income on sheep farms in 2022 is forecast to reduce by 20%, based on increased production costs of 30% (Situation & Outlook Report by Teagasc).
To highlight that there is also huge concern among sheep farmers for the store lamb trade later this year. Hill sheep farmers, in particular, depend heavily on this trade.
To highlight the sector is at a critical juncture as sheep farmers look to plan for the coming years, and without support from Government the sheep sector is vulnerable.
To acknowledge the support scheme put forward by the Minister for Agriculture, but to highlight that the Minister must move quickly to announce the details and get the scheme up and running. The way that input costs are going more support will be needed.
