Specific Details Nicola Byrne (Shine CEO) and Estela Vidal ( Shine Advocacy Officer) were invited to participate at the Mental Health Act pre legislative scrutiny session with members of the Mental Health Sub-Committee at the Oireachtas, on April 5th. Shine presented a few sections of the Mental Health Act where the Human Rights approach needs to be strengthened.

Intended results Shine lobbied for the integration of the human rights approach in the following sections of the Mental Health Act: including: Language, the role of family members, the role of advocates, seclusions and restrains, early intervention, community support, knowledge and information, voice and participation. Shine backed up all the points with relevant articles from the UN Convention of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) and the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR)
