The IDA informed MEP of a request made to Commissioner Janusz Wojciechowski to use his influence to require the Irish Department of Agriculture to put robust measures in place to ensure that Irish whisky labelling is fully compliant with EU law as it relates to the PGI system.

The IDA contacted Minister McConalogue outlining recent stark examples of false indication of provenance in Irish whisky that had been approved by his department. Confirmation was requested as to the enforcement of EU law on Irish whisky labels bearing a geographic indication.
