Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael Framework Document (15th April 2020)
Intended results
In relation to the draft Framework Document, IFA now wish to raise the following -
The proposal under ‘Mission Housing for All', which sets out a plan to “reduce the cost of land to improve the affordability of housing, employing all measures up to and including referenda” will be strongly resisted by IFA, farm families and land owners.
IFA's complete opposition to any such move by the State, whether that be through legislation or referenda to change constitutional property rights. The reality is that there are almost 2,000 hectares of potential development land under State ownership, which can be mobilised today to address the housing challenge.
IFA welcomes the move to launch a National Economic Plan. IFA was a key ‘Social Partner' from the beginning, historically as the leading stakeholder in the Agriculture Pillar and in more recent times we have been a major contributor to the National Economic Dialogue.
Following the financial crash of 2008 – 2010, farming and the agri-food sector was to the fore in providing an engine for growth and made a real contribution to Ireland's economic recovery. We can do so again post COVID-19. The farming pillar must play a full part in the development of any National Plan going forward.
