Specific Details EAI position on objectives for a BREXIT transition

Intended results Urgent UK and EU agreement to a transition period following UK withdrawal from the EU in March 2019, to safeguard the Single Electricity Market (SEM). Confirmation of an extension to the current negotiating period and limit the requirements for regulatory alignment, by the end of this year, to provide market stability and maintain investor confidence. Awareness of the all-island electricity industry’s view on the process of negotiating for continued UK access to the EU internal energy market, and the principles which it believes should inform these negotiations. Ensure the continued delivery of the benefits from the SEM (as the market transitions to I-SEM in 2018) is not undermined by Brexit.

Position paper sent with covering email to Irish MEPs

Meeting (1)

Meeting with Minister Denis Naughten at which BREXIT was raised. EAI noted BREXIT creates a political risk for the continuation of ISEM notwithstanding all operators in GB, EU and on the island wishing a single market to continue. Concessions needed from both UK and EU to facilitate this.
