Along with 112 Europe-based organisations the Environmental Pillar urges you to oppose attempts to re-introduce subsidies for the construction of fishing vessels in the upcoming vote on 27 April on the “Management of the fishing fleets in the outermost regions” 2016/2016(INI).
The science is clear, these subsidies would in the end do nothing for fishing communities as they would undermine the objectives of the reformed Common Fisheries Policy to end overfishing, as well as the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (in particular SDG14) and the ongoing negotiations on fisheries subsidies in the WTO.
The 26 member organisations of the Environmental Pillar therefore call on you to support the Fisheries Committee’s position from 22nd March 2017 that maintained the ban on subsidies for the construction of new fishing vessels, which has existed in the EU since 2004 and which is consistent with the 2014 Parliament position on fisheries subsidies.
