Specific Details
NHI wrote to the Ministers and TD's highlighting the commitments made in the programme for government and that NHI have serious concerns regarding the increasing cost of care. Since 2017 care costs have risen by 81% while increases in the Nursing Home Support Scheme (Fair Deal) have risen by 37% in the same period. Many smaller, independent nursing homes have had to close their doors permanently during this time as it was no longer economically viable to provide care and plan for the future.
Intended results
NHI has been calling for increases in the Fair Deal budget to reflect the reality of significant cost increases being experienced in the sector. While some marginal increases have been forthcoming each year, the quantum is far from what is required. NHI welcomed meetings with the Minister and TD's to discuss the NHSS pricing review, the future of nursing home care and to ensure Government delivers on the express commitment in the Programme for Government .
