Specific Details On 17 June 2026, Senator Maria Byrne, Fine Gael Spokesperson on Health and LeasChathaoirleach of Seanad Éireann, hosted the event "The Irish EU Presidency to Drive the Implementation of the EU Safe Hearts Plan to Transform Structural Heart Disease Care" in Leinster House.

Intended results Organised with the support of the EU Structural Heart Disease (SHD) Coalition, the event brought together Members of the Oireachtas, healthcare professionals, patient advocates and cardiovascular health experts to discuss Ireland's opportunity to lead the implementation of the EU Safe Hearts Plan during its forthcoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

GHH provided the patient perspective - David explained that a routine stethoscope check @ age 4 identified a bicuspid aortic valve & severe aortic stenosis leading to life-saving intervention. He highlighted the importance of patient-centred are, shared decision-making & timely access to treatment. He highlighted that Irelands last CVD strategy concluded in 2019 and was never renewed. He called for a new national CVD strategy on prevention, screening, early diagnosis & timely access to care
