Intended results
To seek support from Irish MEPs in relation to the upcoming vote in the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Tuesday October 7th regarding the Agriculture Committee's report on Mandatory Contracts within the Food Supply Chain.
That, while IFA is supportive of any measures which can improve Irish farmers' position within the supply chain, there are aspects of the Agriculture Committee's report and the EU Commission proposal which if passed, could increase complexity for farmers and undermine the Irish Agricultural Co-Operative model.
That the existing CMO legislation facilitates milk processing in Ireland via farmer governed and owned co-operatives. It is for this reason that IFA supports the amendments put forward by the Renew Group in relation to Article 148 which allows for member states to provide a derogation for co-operatives on the basis that democratic scrutiny is upheld on milk supply agreements which must be imbedded with fair contractual terms.
To highlight that agricultural systems vary greatly across Europe, but Ireland has a proud tradition of strong, farmer led agricultural co-ops, especially in the dairy sector. It is therefore essential to support these amendments which would greatly improve the legislation while ensuring that farmers in milk supply agreements maintain their strong position within the supply chain that is facilitated through the co-operative model.
