EU Forestry Monitoring Law
Intended results
That although IFA agrees with supporting the resilience of European forests, it rejects the EU Commission's proposal on the Forest Monitoring Law.
To show concern as to whether a regulation on forest monitoring is the right proposal to achieve the goals of building resilient forests across Europe. Especially at a time when EU institutions are committed to simplifying legislation and avoiding additional administrative burdens for Member States.
To stress that the priority should be to strengthen cooperation among Europe's national forest inventories. Additional supports are required for those that are lingering behind leading Member States such as Ireland with regards to the Irish Forestry Licencing Programme.
To highlight that further guidance should be provided within the framework of existing national and EU tools and funds. A new legal framework to further coordinate forest monitoring is not required.
To highlight the proposal's lack of practical viability and proportionality, forest monitoring should remail a support tool, not a top-down compliance mechanism.
