IFA Manifesto for Local Government Elections 2024 - Forest Road Single Consent System
Intended results
To highlight that, as the Local Authorities are no longer the consenting authority following the enactment of the Planning and Development (Amendment) Act 2018, which transferred responsibility for granting consent for the construction of forest entrances onto public roads or the widening of such entrances to the Department of Agriculture, Food, and the Marine under the Single Consent System.
Farmers now find themselves waiting on the Roads Department of the relevant Local Authority to consider their application which can take up to 8 weeks due to a safeguard written in to the Single Consent System.
To propose that the Roads Departments within Local Authorities must work with farmers to ensure cost effective and efficient timber mobilisation from farm forests to minimise red tape and/or the requirement to pay a bond in the construction of forest roads.
