Bovine Tuberculosis (TB) - IFA Manifesto for Local Government Elections 2024
Intended results
To highlight that the increased levels of Bovine Tuberculosis (TB) that farmers are having to endure are unacceptable and must be addressed.
To highlight that the most effective mechanism to reduce Bovine Tuberculosis (TB) is to reduce densities of wildlife susceptible to Bovine Tuberculosis(TB) that interact with cattle.
To highlight that various studies undertaken have validated this reduction beyond question.
To highlight that the Government have erred in Ireland by their decision to move towards vaccination as opposed to badger density reduction, which has resulted in increased levels of Bovine Tuberculosis (TB) that have coincided with the increase in areas under vaccination.
To highlight that deer are also contributing to Bovine Tuberculosis (TB) spread and the maintenance of outbreaks on farms. The Deer Strategy Group have been mandated to reduce numbers of deer in the country and this work must commence immediately.
To highlight that displacement of both species due to major infrastructural works compounds the issues and increases the levels of Bovine Tuberculosis (TB) spread onto cattle farms.
To propose that Local Authorities ensure, in advance of any major infrastructural works in their regions, that density reduction measures are implemented for both badgers and deer.
