Specific Details
Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) compensation for Sheep Farmers on Cooley Peninsula
Intended results
To insist that the Department of Agriculture, Food, and the Marine, engage with farmers who did not initiate legal proceedings for appropriate compensation arising from the destruction of the sheep flocks due to the foot and mouth outbreaks.
To highlight that the then Taoiseach indicated during extensive negotiations that IFA members who had not engaged in legal proceedings would be compensated as directed by the Supreme Court and the decision of the Court would apply across the board to all sheep farmers affected by the foot and mouth outbreak.
To propose that the Department of Agriculture, Food, and the Marine should now revisit this matter, as the Supreme Court found that the Department had erred in providing the level of compensation that it had previously offered.
To seek a meeting with the Minister for Agriculture, Food, and the Marine as soon as possible to endeavour to resolve this matter in a just and equitable way.
To ensure all farmers receive fair compensation on foot of the Supreme Court judgement on the matter. All farmers must be treated the same regardless of whether they were part of the court action.
