Specific Details
In person meeting with Minister Eamon Ryan, Sec Gen Mark Griffin, Ass Sec Gen Matt Collins, Paul Kenny, Special Advisor.
Intended results
Meeting to discuss SSE ambitions and priorities, and to hear Minister and Department’s priorities.
Outlined SSE’s view that the way to deliver on security of supply, climate ambitions and mitigate exposure to energy crisis in future is to invest in renewables with low-carbon flexible generation. Government focus must therefore be on maintaining stable and supportive investment landscape to deliver generation capacity. This includes the development of policies to support hydrogen and carbon capture power generation, with biofuels as a bridging option.
Discussed security of supply challenges, and policy response. Updated on developments at Tarbert Power Station, including ongoing discussions regarding Temporary Emergency Generation Project.
Discussion on offshore wind highlighting progress made ahead of ORESS1 and giving SSE view of Phase 2 best model (drawing on Scotwind example). Discussion on emerging EU emergency measures highlighting need to account for costs of operating flexible generation.
