Specific Details The RGFI identified a number of legislative matters in the proposed European Union Renewable Energy Directive II that require amending, clarity on definitions, with recognition and acknowledgement that renewable gas has an essential role to play in providing a sustainable and secure supply of energy. The RED II recast will be an important EU Policy Document for enabling deployment and development of the biogas industry in Ireland

Intended results The Renewable Energy Directive II to provide better clarity and direction on the inclusion of biogas industry in the decarbonisation of energy to commercial, industrial, domestic and power generation. An indigenous industry can be developed in Ireland by the Irish Government supporting this technology with the same level of supports given to wind and solid biomass for generation of electricity. A recent SEAI report shows that biomethane is a low carbon alternative fuel at competitive LCOE.
