Specific Details Sexual Abuse and Violence in Ireland, was published in 2002. It was the most comprehensive research on attitudes and beliefs to sexual violence in Ireland. Since its publication, it has helped to inform policies across government departments on sexual violence. The DRCC have and will continue to lobby for a second SAVI because we believe it is imperative that the policies and services needed in the area of sexual violence are appropriately informed by up to date empirical longitudinal research.

SAVI was the most comprehensive piece of research on attitudes and beliefs about sexual violence in Ireland and its findings confirmed and validated the stories that were being told to helplines over the previous 25 years of the RCC movement in Ireland, in therapy rooms, doctors’ surgeries and A & Es around the country, of the prevalence of sexual violence in Ireland. In lobbying Ministers such as the Minister for Justice and Equality we highlight the need to conduct a second SAVI so that we can have comparative rigorous research and an answer to the question - does the increase in the number of victims using the services mean 1) There is an increase in the prevalence of these crimes? OR 2) Is it that the victims are coming forward now and reporting the crime to the RCCs and to the Gardai?
