EU Promotion Policy
Intended results
To highlight that the decision by the European Commission to propose a reduction in the Promotion Budget and the 2025 Annual Work Programme sends a negative signal to farmers regarding the promotion of EU agricultural food products.
To highlight that the proposal means that the available budget for EU co-funded promotions in 2025 will be €92m, which represents a reduction of 50% when compared to 2024 (€185.9m).
To emphasise that multi-annual programmes, in which Bord Bia have participated along with other Member State and partner organisations may not be available for the forthcoming promotional period 2025-2028. Previous successful programmes include
• €16.9m Lamb Campaign (2015 - 2017 & 2018 - 2022)
• €11.2m Potatoes Campaign (2015 - 2018 & 2020 - 2023)
• €5.4m EU Fruit & Veg (2020 - 2024)
• €5m Mushrooms (2023 - 2026)
To highlight that, as a result, we foresee increased competition for simple programmes which have been previously oversubscribed by an average of 239%.
To point out that MEPs in the Agriculture Committee discussed the EU Budget for financial year 2025 on 23rd July and there was opposition to the reduction and strong support for the restoration of the full budget.
To strongly support the restoration of the budget in full. It is very discouraging for farmer producers to see the negative message surrounding the EU agri food sector that is being generated with such a proposal in cuts to promotional funding.
To seek support for a strong EU promotion policy with adequate investment and a restoration of the proposed cuts to the 2025 Annual Work Programme.
