Specific Details A meeting between the Tanaiste, Leo Varadkar and Senior Executives of the Servier Group took place in Paris on the 16th February 2022, at Mr. Varadkar's request. The meeting was an opportunity to address the EU pharmaceutical strategy with the Irish Authorities, on behalf of the pharmaceutical industry. In particular, it focussed on the agreement on supply and pricing of medicine which came into effect in October 2021 and which will impact negatively on Servier and other pharma companies.

Intended results To call for, along with with IPHA (Irish Pharmaceutical Industry Association), the organisation of an annual forum between the authorities and the industry’s representatives, to ensure a sustainable and well-balanced development of the pharmaceutical market. To shape the views of Mr. Varadkar as future Taoiseach, in relation to legislative proposals to be published by the European Commission by the end of 2022. These proposals will address the European regulatory framework for medicines which will include the way innovations are introduced on Member States’ markets; the incentives framework; the model of protection of the Intellectual Property; the transparency of supply chains and the prevention of shortages. The pharmaceutical industry is ready to work with the European Commission and the Member States to find well-balanced solutions to the current challenges identified by the EU Pharmaceutical strategy, i.e. to improve access to medicines in EU-27 markets, prevent shortages, address unmet medical needs and optimise the regulatory framework. The pharmaceutical industry, through the European Federation EFPIA, has developed proactive proposals on each topic. Servier is open to dedicating a specific meeting in Paris, or in Dublin, to introduce these proposals to Mr. Varadkar and relevant representatives.

Event / Reception (1)

The meeting was held at the Head Office of the Servier Group, Paris, 16th February 2022. Mr. Leo Varadkar was attending the Council of Ministers (Trade) on February 14th in Marseille and took the opportunity to meet with current investors in Ireland for a “thank you visit”. Servier, in turn, took the opportunity to address the EU pharmaceutical strategy with the Irish Authorities and to address some of the challenges its operation faces in Ireland in relation to pricing and reimbursement.
